Barclosh Farm :
Our four cottages are on a typical Galloway farm extending to 270 acres. The farm specialises in rare Belted Galloway cattle ('Belties') There is plenty of gentle walking and stunning views. Many species of birds, including owls and hawks, frequent the farm and Roe Deer are often spotted. The farm even boasts its own 14th century castle, although unfortunately very little now remains. Barclosh is only two miles from Dalbeattie, twelve miles from the thriving regional centre of Dumfries, five miles from Sandyhills beach and similar distances from Rockcliffe and the yachting centre of Kippford. It is, therefore, an excellent place as a base for your holiday.

Fantastic mountain biking is on our doorstep with two world class trails at Dalbeattie and Mabie Forests. We also provide secure accommodation and washing facilities for your bikes. For more information about the biking check out http://www.7stanes.gov.uk.

RSPB Bird Survey at Barclosh Farm :

During 2003 the RSPB surveyed the farm and undertook a bird survey. An above-average number of 52 different species were identified, including some (such as Green Woodpecker) of high conservation concern. In the cottages are copies of the plan illustrating the results of the survey. This should help to guide visitors to where they can see birds of interest.

Barclosh Farm is conveniently sited for those wishing to visit Galloway Forest Park, South Ayrshire, The Machars and The Mull of Galloway. The attractions near Farm are summarised below.

Dalbeattie is a small picturesque town set in the beautiful Galloway countryside. Close at hand is the Solway Coast with its golden sands and good bathing for all the family. The area is equally famous for the hills, some rising to more than 2,000 feet, providing breathtaking views, superb walking and abundant wild life.

To the south of Barclosh are the cliffs and beaches of the Colvend Coast, one of the finest parts of Galloway. The beaches at Sandyhills and at Southerness are extensive, whilst there are six miles of walks along the cliffs and nearly seventeen miles of walks in Dalbeattie Forest alone. The Mabie Forest, Screel Hill and Doach Wood offer yet more miles of walks and scenery to the keen walker.

Golfers are well catered for; two local courses at Kippford, one at Dalbeattie, two at Southerness, one at Sandyhills, one at Castle Douglas, offer a good range of challenges. For more information on these and the other Dumfries and Galloway courses, go to Dumfries & Galloway Golf Links

Barclosh is a very good base for those wishing to visit sites associated with Scotland's turbulent history. Thirteen miles to the north-east in Dumfries, where Bruce murdered the Red Comyn at Greyfriars church.

About the same distance by road to the east is New Abbey, whose beautiful Sweetheart Abbey was built by Princess Devorguilla in memory of her husband, John Balliol. Their son John briefly ruled Scotland, as did his grandson, Edward, after which the MacFergus castle near Dalbeattie was razed to the ground. But the association with Scottish history continued; at Threave Castle, near Castle Douglas, Mons Meg may have been used to help batter the Black Douglas's stronghold into submission.

To the south and west, twelve miles from Dalbeattie, the ruined walls of Dundrennan Abbey bear witness to the place where Mary Queen of Scots left Scottish territory for nineteen years of English exile and final execution at Fotheringhay Castle. Looking again at Dumfries, the greatest Scottish poet, Robert Burns, lived in three homes in Dumfries, finally dying there. All this, within fifteen miles of Dalbeattie.

How To Find Us :
From Dumfries follow the A711 Dalbeattie road. After about six miles you will pass through the village of Beeswing. Continue for a further two miles. On the right hand side of the road you will see the Mossband Caravan Site and a turning right to Kirkgunzeon. Immediately afterwards is a turning left to Caulkerbush.

Take the Caulkerbush road. After a further two miles the road turns sharp left. At this point there is a turning right signed "NO THROUGH ROAD" followed by a second turning right (almost straight on, in fact).

Take the second turning right. Follow the road past a house on the left and another one on the right. Climb a hill and as you go down the other side the entrance to Barclosh Farm will be found on the right hand side. The farm house and the cottages are at the end of the drive.
